Emory College Showcases Talent at Campaign Event

Friends and supporters of Emory College of Arts and Sciences are attending a weekend of special events on campus Feb. 20-22 to celebrate the school’s colorful past and promising future.

The event centers on the college’s efforts to raise $110 million through Campaign Emory to support students, faculty, programs, and facilities. Highlights will be a lecture by celebrated novelist Salman Rushdie (pictured above) and an evening with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra.

The celebration begins in the Math and Science Center Friday, Feb. 20, with an “Evening Among the Stars,” featuring live music, a whimsical presentation of Emory myths and memories by Emory’s archivist, a visit to the Emory Observatory, and talks by Emory President James W. Wagner, Emory College Dean Robert A. Paul, and College Campaign Chair Wendell S. Reilly 80C.

Music will include The Mac Isseks Quartet—four Emory undergraduates who study and perform jazz—and Emory pianist William Ransom with members of the Vega String Quartet, Emory’s quartet in residence and one of the world’s top chamber ensembles.

On Saturday, Feb. 21, the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and the Emory University Concert Choir will perform in Emory’s Donna and Marvin Schwartz Center for Performing Arts. The final evening, Sunday, Feb. 22, will feature “Adaptation,” a lecture by Salman Rushdie, who is a Distinguished Writer in Residence at Emory.

Emory College of Arts and Sciences has raised nearly $51 million of its $110 million campaign goal to date. Gifts to the college provide student financial aid, faculty and staff support, and funding for curriculum development, research, and programs. Donors also are helping fund a new psychology building and renovate several other campus buildings.
