Candler School of Theology aspires to be a premier school of theological education, a shaper of the community’s conscience, a reconciling agent for church and society, and a leader for Emory. Candler’s remarkable faculty, dedicated staff, and the unique resources of a top-ranked research university afford students the opportunity to grow into creative thinkers and active leaders prepared to forge the future of Christian ministry.
Jim and Mary Wesley were married in 1954 and lived on North Decatur Road near the University. During his time as an Emory neighbor, the Georgia Tech alumnus developed an affection for Candler. He began his career at a small radio station in nearby Decatur—he even worked briefly at the Protestant Radio and Television Center on Emory’s campus. Eventually Jim became a major broadcasting executive, owning and managing radio stations throughout the southeastern United States.
Through the years, the Wesleys witnessed the struggles of the young ministers in Mary’s family—there are ten. The Wesleys wanted to remove the financial burdens of theological education for students and enable young ministers to become effective earlier in their careers. In 2008 they celebrated the Candler graduation of Jill Moffett, the first in a perpetual series of scholars supported by a scholarship endowment they established. Faithful worshippers wherever their journeys have taken them, the Wesleys also are funding the Wesley Teaching Chapel in the second phase of Candler’s new building. And they have
included Candler in their estate plans.
