Emory School of Medicine seeks to attract passionate movers and shakers and then make sure these students can afford to follow their hearts.
In her third year at Emory School of Medicine, Kate Neuhausen spent hours at the bedside of one uninsured mom, helping her navigate the physical, social, and financial complications of a cancer diagnosis. Grady Hospital was in crisis too and on the brink of closing. Patients were terrified. If Grady closed, they would have no place else to go.
Neuhausen became a tireless student advocate for the underserved, the uninsured, and the vulnerable at Grady. She led a student charge, HealthSTAT, to ensure the public hospital’s survival as a safety net for the poor and training ground for one of every four doctors in the state. In spring 2008 Grady restructured its governance and management, clearing the way for a $200 million donation and ensuring the hospital’s future.
Neuhausen will always be grateful for the full scholarship that allowed her to attend Emory and effect change beyond the school’s walls. The first doctor in her family, she plans to continue building her skills as an advocate and pursue a health policy fellowship after her residency.
She’s been fortunate. Medical school debt limits the career goals of many medical students. Without worrying about paying back enormous loans, students can preserve their idealism during medical school and emerge with their dreams intact, whether it’s to serve the underserved, teach future physicians, find new treatments, or even change health policy.
Your gift will help the School of Medicine train the next generation of leaders, leverage dreams, and save lives.
