Strengthening Faculty Distinction

Faculty members in Emory’s School of Nursing are raising the national standard of nursing education, research, and practice. They are international experts in heart failure, HIV medication adherence, patient safety, and sleep deprivation. They are among nursing’s best teachers, clinicians, and researchers, and each day they use their time and talents to forge a whole new model of health care.

As a nursing undergraduate, Sandra Dunbar chose to work in a hospital coronary care unit for her senior practicum. Inspired by the unit’s staff, she was drawn to a career in cardiovascular nursing. The first college graduate in her family, she is now the Charles Howard Candler Professor of Cardiovascular Nursing at Emory. She helped create the school’s doctoral program, and her research is making life easier for heart patients and their families. One of her studies, which she presented at the American Heart Association’s national meeting in Chicago, found ways to reduce depression and anxiety in patients with implanted cardiac defibrillators. Another, in collaboration with medical faculty from Emory and Morehouse School of Medicine, is exploring why African Americans have a higher rate of heart disease and why they are more likely to have certain risk factors.

As a leader in research on symptoms and health outcomes, Dunbar typifies the insight and creativity of Emory’s nursing faculty. In every specialty, they work to improve patient outcomes, strengthen nursing research, prepare tomorrow’s health care leaders, and influence health policy.
