Creating Community and Engaging Society

Emory strives to be a good neighbor, seeks to elevate the practice of meaningful communication, and cares for the environment. The University’s commitment to supporting varied ideas and values improves the health of communities inside and outside the campus gates, while a commitment to sustainability preserves the natural environment. Each new Emory building is certified by the U.S. Green Building Council for its efficient use of water and energy, responsible choice of materials, and impact on the environment. Emory’s “no net loss” policy preserves the forest canopy.

As an Emory College senior, alumnus Erik Fyfe turned his honors thesis into a biodiesel program that uses recycled cooking oil from campus dining. Nearly half of the University’s shuttles use the fuel, which reduces waste as well as pollution. The rest of the shuttle fleet runs on compressed natural gas or electricity.

Today Fyfe lives and works aboard a 75-foot sloop on New York’s Hudson River, teaching school children and adults the value of caring for America’s threatened waterways.

Your gift to Emory will strengthen the community and further the University’s leadership and environmental stewardship.
