Exploring New Frontiers in Science and Technology

With worldwide expertise in research, Emory is unlocking the deepest mysteries of the brain, creating strategies to predict and prevent disease before it starts, and combining disciplines to strengthen discovery, address health crises, and understand emerging diseases.

Your support will enable unprecedented progress in neuroscience, shift the focus of contemporary medicine from disease management to health care, and inspire creative collaboration among disciplines in exploring new scientific frontiers.

Understanding the Brain

In the neurosciences, Emory combines the strengths of more than 250 faculty members from 23 areas of study into a premier center for scientific training. These experts, among the world’s best neuroscientists, are searching for novel treatments and cures for devastating brain diseases.

Neurosurgeon Robert Gross is testing a device for the brain, similar to a pacemaker for the heart, to see whether it can help prevent seizures in people with epilepsy. Part of a team of Emory experts studying epilepsy and other neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, Gross develops innovative surgical techniques to ease debilitating symptoms and restore health. At least half of the 2.7 million Americans with epilepsy have seizures despite taking medication. If successful, this new treatment would offer great relief.

Researching Health and Well-being

Collaborating with faculty at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Emory researchers are combining genetic information with cutting-edge biotechnology to keep people healthy. At the Center for Health Discovery and Well-Being, part of the Emory/Georgia Tech Predictive Health Initiative, scientists are studying healthy people to learn how to prevent disease. This new approach is leading a revolutionary shift in medicine: from treating disease to maintaining health.

Harnessing the Power of Technology

Because scientists are generating and analyzing increasingly large amounts of data, powerful computational tools are crucial to staying on the cutting edge of research. Emory biochemists, geneticists, and computer scientists equipped with high-performance computers and software create discoveries in cancer therapy, imaging, and pharmaceuticals, among other areas. This vigorous community of scholars links basic sciences with applied sciences to solve fundamental problems.
